Project Reach Team Serves at Home with a Heart…

Posted on: February 12th, 2012 by Bill Swindle

One of our Project Reach ministry partners, Home with a Heart, is a Christ-based recovery program for men battling addictions of all sorts. All it takes is being on their campus in Liberty, SC for a few minutes, and you can feel the hope in the atmosphere. This is not a typical rehabilitation facility. God has blessed this ministry with 29 acres of land, a 2,000 sq ft home for the director and his family, plus two 3,700 sq. ft. dormitories that hold 20 men. They also have a beautiful 2,800 sq. ft. chapel with a fully equipped commercial kitchen and a sanctuary to have services and classes. It’s a place way out in the country…and it gives the residents time to get away from the distractions and temptations of the world for at least 8 weeks.  Men arrive hopeless, struggling, and hurting, but time and time again God uses this ministry to help them get clean, connected, and turn their focus on new life in Jesus Christ.

The number of lives changed and committed to Christ here is staggering. Over 1900 men have made decisions for Christ since the doors were opened. Incredible!  Thursday night a Reach team including our team coach Mark Solon went out to spend some time with the residents, and cook them a meal that included huge meatballs, vegetables, mashed potatoes/gravy, and more. We were greeted with a lot of smiling faces, and a large group of men ready and willing to spend some time sharing their stories with team members.

There were so many men sharing how God was using Home with a Heart and the staff there to impact their lives. Some were struggling with nearly life-long addiction to drugs or alcohol, and the Home was a last resort for them after hitting rock bottom. Each of our team members had great conversations with men in the program. We hung out in the cafeteria and ate together, and got to know some of them and their stories a little.

As we finished eating, the men were preparing to head to their evening NA meeting and I heard a rumor that they might be attending services at Foothills Community Church Sunday. Sure enough, on Sunday morning just before the second service, the Director Alex Richey and many of the men came walking through the concourse doors carrying their bibles! It was a pleasure to see them again, and they added a lot of energy and excitement to our service. Afterward, as I was speaking with some of the residents, they shared what a blessing it was to worship with us. IMO…we were the ones that were blessed!

Every Reach team member has a heart to serve and share with the residents at Home with a Heart, because they have in some way been impacted by addiction in their own life or the life of a friend or family member. If you or your family has experience in addiction in any way, this is a great place to allow God to use you to share your experience, and love on others struggling with addiction in the name of Jesus.
